Every spring and fall a large number of people suffer from Allergy season. It is estimated 35 million Americans suffer from health problems as a result of allergens. Not only that, but statistics show that allergens account for 10 million missed workdays each year.

Also word from the Environmental Protection Agency says indoor air quality is one of North America’s top environmental issues. Pollutants such as chemicals, mold, dust, dander and pollen are responsible for many ailments people suffer on an ongoing basis. Further, carpet can hide the harmful bacteria, mold spores and pet dander that researchers say is responsible for the increase in asthma cases in the U.S.

To help cut down on problems, many experts suggest adding wood flooring to your new or existing homes. Wood floors result in better air quality because they don’t collect the dust and dirt that carpeting often gets embedded in it. And did you know that a new wood floor can last three to six times longer than carpeting?

Dr. Neil Schachter, professor of pulmonary medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine says that “Over the years, we’ve seen a number of allergy and asthma cases attributed to poor air quality in people’s homes”.

Wood floors are not only beautiful they’re also renewable and extremely durable. By installing wood floors in your homes, you can send a signal to the industry to plant more trees, which could result in more forestland, a very positive thing.

A very recent study also found that hardwood floors greatly reduce the accumulation of toxins. This is a result of less carpet in your home. Several chemical toxins are used and created in the manufacture of carpeting.

To help you improve your indoor air quality, here are some simple tips.

- Check your air conditioner. The ducts of your heating and central air-conditioning system are a big collector of dust and grime. Have them cleaned regularly.

- Inspect your walls. Did you know wallpaper is a potent food for dust mites and mold, both of which can grow behind the surface of the wallpaper? Use flat, washable paint instead.

- Avoid carpet in the bedroom. It is estimated that the average bed contains 10,000 dust mites, which usually burrow deep into carpets. Install wood floors instead. Believe me it makes a big difference.

- Grow houseplants to improve the indoor air quality of closed spaces. A groundbreaking study done by NASA reported that indoor plants were capable of removing pollutants such as formaldehyde and benzene from indoor air. Some plants do a better job as indoor air purifiers than others, and the list includes peace lilies, Boston ferns, and the ubiquitous rubber plant.

Indoor air quality has more of an impact on our health and wellbeing than it is given credit for. Allergens and pollutants have traditionally been associated with the outdoors. However modern buildings with increased energy efficiency and advanced building materials have created the problem of indoor air pollution.

Help your home be a safe and healthy home by avoiding carpet and installing wood floors instead. You won’t be disappointed.

In most of our houses it is very easy to find a room in a cluttered mess. Our workshops or spaces are no different. We all know it takes very little to make a mess but some hard work to de-clutter and organize. That is why most of us have that cluttered room because we don’t have the time or we have other priorities.

But clutter diminishes a smile, dampens the spirit, and so should not be tolerated. It also makes us very unproductive when trying to get a project done.

A lot of people find that one of their favorite things to do when stressed out is to clean! You find that hard to imagine, right? Well, it is true. Cleaning gives order and purpose to your life, even if only in smaller chunks at a time.

Some people when they go to de-clutter their work space all they do is move the clutter around from one shelf to another. That’s not what we are talking about here. We are talking about de-cluttering the complete room. Saying good-bye to the dust, saying good-bye to the junk and saying hello to a room that we can breathe and move around in! Now, doesn’t that sound delightful?

At this point you may be thinking about the TV show hoarders and saying my shop isn’t like that. Well be thankfully that isn’t so but that doesn’t mean you don’t have some work to do. I know in my small shop it doesn’t take long for things to get out of place and cluttered especially if I haven’t used it for a while.

So where do you start?

You should start out by writing a list of what you absolutely want done. Move slowly through your shop and write down all the things that are out of place. Materials that were scrap but never got rid of. Piles of projects that you planned to do but haven’t got around to. Write them all down!

By now, if you are thinking this through, you can probably see a list of very workable sized chores that can be accomplished, one-at-a-time over a day or two. The idea is to get started and work your way around your shop. And over a day or so, you will again have a beautiful, uncluttered shop as your reward!

Do not become discouraged if your attempt to enlist some help from your family runs a-muck. One can hope but if you are really honest about it, you probably don’t want some of your stuff touched by anyone else anyway. Some chores are best left to just your pair of hands. That way you can be sure that the chores will be done right the first time.

The big thing is don’t get overwhelmed by the whole job. Try to accomplish one task or project at a time and fairly quickly you will see you are making a difference.

Now that you know what tasks you want to accomplish and how to approach it, the next big step is to get started and get rid of that clutter.

The last bit we have talked about a number of brands of tools and the market is filled with many more brands of power tools. It can be really tough making a decision as to the best brand for you.

So here are some basic areas of comparison that you need to take into consideration. They will also help you get the best deal on the power tools you do decide to purchase.

Purchase price of course is something we are all going to look at. It doesn’t matter how great a tool is if it is too much for your budget then it can’t even be considered. Most power tools are reasonably priced for what you are buying. But tools are not cheap and you can also run across some heavy duty, top of the line, power tools that have a price tag that reflect it.

The purchase price isn’t the only cost. There is also the cost of essentials that go along with it like sandpaper, belts, blades, bits, or a number of other items. Optional accessories are also something to consider.

The features certainly affect the price of a particular power tool. Be careful not to get caught up in all the features that are available for a particular tool. You could end up paying a lot more for a power tool that has features you don’t need or intend to use. But don’t write those features off immediately because you may find a few you could really use that you didn’t think of. That could definitely make a particular model more appealing to you.

Customer support and service can be very important. It is important that customer support is available to you in the event you have questions, comments, or complaints about your power tool purchase. It can be over the phone, by mail, or on the internet. Since power tools are designed to last a very long time, you will want to find out about the availability of replacement parts. Manufacturers who have been in business for a very long time are likely to still be there down the road when you need a replacement part for your power tool.

The quality of your power tool is very important. You can usually get an unbiased comparison of a particular type of power tool online. This is a good way to compare tools before purchasing. These reviews are free to look at. You can also get comparisons in magazines such as Consumer Reports. However, you will have to buy the magazine to get this information.

Handling the tool first is always a good idea. It is too heavy? Does it seem too flimsy for the job you plan to do with it? How noisy is it? Does it feel right in your hands? Different tools just feel better to one person than another.

Safety should be a top priority on your list when it comes to selecting a power tool. What is its safety rating? What safety features does this particular power tool offer you? All power tools on the market have some basic safety features in place. But some only offer the bare minimum, while others go the extra mile to ensure their customers safety them.

Shopping for a power tool is sometimes like taking a child into a candy store. However, if you follow these guidelines you won’t be blindsided by features or brand name or the design of the tool and you will be able to make the best choice for you.

Porter-Cable is a manufacturer of power tools that is very well known. With their reliability and quality they have earned their place as one of the leading power tool makers in the world.

They are a power tool manufacturer you can rely on. Porter-Cable has been in operation since 1906 when two young men started a small business out of their garage in New York. They began marketing power tools in 1914. Porter-Cable has proven over time that they are a company who makes power tools that are reliable, durable, and long lasting.

Do you need some reliable power tools that work well? Porter-Cable power tools are available at some home improvement and hardware stores. You can also purchase them online. The reconditioned Porter-Cable power tools can only be purchased online.

When doing any project it is essential that you choose the right power tool if you want to get the best results. There are hundreds of different tools on the market so choosing the best one can be difficult.

There are also many things to consider when looking to buy a power tool. Some of us are partial to a particular brand name. Other things that heavily influence a power tool purchase are price, quality, and warranty.

I bet it will surprise you that 29% of power tools are purchased by women. Sure some of them are to give as gifts for family members, friends, co-workers, and significant others but many of those power tools are for their own personal use.

If you are using a saw for the project, you also need to be using the right blade.
There are rip blades that are meant to cut with the grain of the materials. The deep teeth help remove the material as it cuts, but it doesn’t necessarily make a clean cut.
A crosscut blade has teeth that alternate sides to give you a very nice cut.
A combination blade is commonly used instead of switching between a rip blade and a crosscut blade.

The other factor is the number of teeth a blade has. The fewer teeth, the rougher the cut is going to be. The more teeth the cleaner and smoother the cut will be. There are many specialty blades available.

Using the right power tool is also going to make your project go smoother as well as affect the quality of your job. You may have several tools to choose from that will get the job done, which one is going to work best is the real question.

Depending on the tools you already have. Buying a new one can make sense if you have several projects to use it on. But it probably isn’t worth the expense if you only plan to use it once or twice.

It is also very important whey you are looking to buy a power tool to take into account your size and strength. Try some models displayed in stores. If the tool feels heavy, just think how heavy it is going to feel when you’ve been operating it for a while? Another thing is some smaller hand tools are designed to get into very small spaces, but if you have large hands you may find it a little difficult.

If you have a particular project in mind, you might try searching the internet for the project you are planning to do. You should find some good information on which power tools are best for the job. You will probably also find some very helpful tips for doing the project as well.

The perfect power tool for the job is one you know how to operate, is designed for doing the project you are working on and fits well in your hands, i.e. one you can handle easily.
There is nothing I enjoy more when doing a project than using a quality tool that is made for the job and makes completing the work easy. Enjoy!

So what greater surprise could a child have than a fabulous playground in their own backyard? Children love to spend hours playing on slides, swing sets, and playgrounds in general. Many people install playground equipment in their own backyard instead of taking their kids on a trek to the neighborhood park.

There is a huge selection of excellent playground equipment on the market. The main question you will have to answer is what kind of material do you want it made out of. Though you may have many reasons for installing backyard playground equipment , you will have to evaluate the differences between the two main materials, metal and wood. You will want to do this evaluation carefully before your purchase.

It doesn’t matter whether you choose wooden or metal playground equipment you need to be sure that it follows all the proper safety standards. You also need to remember that children are injured every year by not playing safely on playground equipment without appropriate supervision. So it doesn’t matter that this playground is going to be in your own backyard (instead of at the neighborhood park), your children should still play under appropriate supervision.

As a parent you probably think back to the playground equipment you played on and at that time most of it was made from metal. Even today, many swing sets are still made from metal tubes and use a chain for attaching the seat.

Although metal equipment is still available, wooden equipment has far surpassed the metal in safety and versatility. One of the main reasons for the popularity of wooden playground equipment today is the ability you have at customizing the options. Another reason many parents choose wooden playground equipment is it can be built for less money than purchasing a metal play set.

If you are at all handy take a look at building your own fantastic outdoor playground creation. Wood is definitely the way to go for doing this. There are all kinds of kits that allow you to combine the different elements, slides, swings, climbing walls, and a variety of other aspects to customize your set.

The planning and building process required in making your wooden playground equipment is a great project for the entire family. Involving your children will allow them to express themselves and create a custom set that they will truly enjoy. Let your imagine roam wild!

Maybe picking up a hammer and nails doesn’t sound like it is in your comfort zone. Then look at pre-made sets instead. Although you won’t have the same ability to customize your set, there are so many fantastic options available you still will be able to have a great set.

Keep in mind that any equipment you build or buy should be regularly inspected to make sure it remains safe for your kids to use. Wooden playground equipment is especially prone to have splits or splinters which can hurt young hands. The wood can also deteriorate over time and will need to be made out of wood that is made for outdoor use. It is also good to keep the wood looking fresh with proper weather coatings every year or two.

Wood or metal? It’s wood in my books.

Kitchen countertops have to be able to take a lot of abuse. They need to be able to stand up to the heat of pots, cutting from knives and abrasive cleansers. I’m sure you have seen countertops all scratched up and know what I’m talking about.

So let’s look at 7 of the most popular kitchen countertop materials being used today that give you this kind of durability:

Granite is a natural stone and a very popular choice for its natural beauty and durability. Granite is very hard in fact the hardest and densest of the natural stones. Granite is used to create kitchen countertops that are extremely scratch resistant and can keep their luster longer than most other materials. Granite is the most expensive of all the kitchen countertop surfaces, although it is still considered a very practical material in that it will last forever and is virtually indestructible.

Marble is another natural stone and is considered to be very elegant and will last longer than the kitchen cabinets for sure. It is very expensive however and requires some care. Acidic foods such as orange juice will etch the finished surface of a marble kitchen countertop.

Slate is rich and beautiful and therefore is often used for kitchen countertops, bathroom sinks or fireplace surrounds. It’s look and style means it can be used in either modern or traditional kitchens and is sometimes used in combination with marble. It is less expensive than marble yet it is durable, strong, and can withstand hard use.

Concrete is one of the biggest fads in kitchen countertops today. It is right at home in the industrial or contemporary kitchen designs of today. It is sometimes available in pre formed sections but more often is poured and formed on-site (Often by the home owner). It is a great material to use for unusually shaped counters. The countertop needs to be handled carefully before and during installation as it can crack. It can also crack if the concrete should contract. It can be stained any color and then the surface can be polished and finished as desired. Concrete kitchen countertops are expensive, (unless you are doing it yourself) and require a sealant and have some care needs.

Corian is a solid surface material that became very popular in the 1990’s. It is a man-made product and can be made any color. It is a solid surface that is not porous and can easily be repaired if scratched or burned. It is still highly recommended by kitchen countertop experts.

Stainless Steel> is a product that has many advantages including it’s very hygienic, easy to clean, has ability to stand up to extreme wear and heat. It is a great product for that ultra modern kitchen and our new appliances. It has some disadvantages in that it can be noisy and scratches will develop.

Tile surfaces are beautiful and can be tough, hard-wearing takes hot pans, heat and stain resistant. There are several different types of tiles to choose from including ceramic, porcelain, quarry, glass, natural stone and mosaic. It has good design flexibility as they are available in many colors, sizes and textures. Tile is often used for trim or backsplashes even when a different product is used for the countertop. Tiles though are not as durable, as they can become chipped or cracked and the grout can easily become stained.
